Final Void Use

Mining voids (pits) are one of the most enduring environmental impacts of mining and, upon cessation of mining, will generally fill with water to the level of the surrounding water table to produce mine lakes. There may be a range of possible uses for the final void, and some of these will be dictated by the quality of the water in the void.

The objectives of this program are to:

  • identify possible beneficial uses of final voids after mine closure;
  • develop technologies which will assist in enhancing the range of possible uses; and
  • predict final void water quality.
