Mine Environment Neutral Drainage Program (MEND) Report (2004)
MEND have released a report on 'Review of Water Quality Issues in Neutral pH Drainage: Examples and Emerging Priorities for the Mining Industry in Canada (November 2004)'. This report is available in hard copy for $35.00 (Cdn.) plus additional taxes. To obtain further information regarding this report or MEND, visit the MEND website at: http://mend.nrcan.gc.ca or email: mend_nedem@nrcan.gc.ca.

TEAM NT (2004) Technologies for the Environmental Advancement of Mining in the Northern Territory - Toolkit
This publication arose out of a Northern Territory Minerals Council Inc project funded by AusIndustry and managed by the Northern Territory Government. Workshops with international specialists were held at a number of mine sites in the Territory and included toxicology of arsenic, cover systems, water treatment technologies for surface and groundwater and the benefits of adequate risk assessment and planning. This publication has captured some of the highlights of the program and has useful hints for mining executives, mining engineers and environment staff associated with mines not only in the Northern Territory but also elsewhere. ACMER has agreed to assist in dissemination of the information in this report by making it available on its website at: http://www.acmer.uq.edu.au/publications/attachments/TEAMNTToolkit.pdf

In addition, a reference listed in the Toolkit, 'CANMET-CETEM Manual on Cover System Design for Reactive Mine Wastes' is also available on the ACMER website at: http://www.acmer.uq.edu.au/publications/attachments/CANMETBrazilCoverDesignManual.pdf

Development of Rehabilitation Completion Criteria for Native Ecosystem Establishment on Coal Mines in the Bowen Basin, Author O. Nichols, ACARP Report, C12045 (2004)
This project addressed the problems companies and government often encounter when developing completion criteria for native ecosystem rehabilitation. Eleven coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin were visited, and two were studied in detail. The process involved developing appropriate objectives, a monitoring program, indicators, completion criteria and a post-relinquishment management and monitoring program. On the basis of the review and case studies, 13 general principles were developed that could be used by other companies to address completion criteria and related issues. A copy of the report's abstract can be viewed on the ACMER website at: http://www.acmer.uq.edu.au/publications/attachments/AbstractBowenBasinCCReport This report is available from ACARP at http://www.acarp.com.au/.

The NSW Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources has provided some information on management guidelines for seed production of Australian Native Grass Cultivars. Click here to download the guidelines.

Engineering Guidelines for AMD Remediation (2003)
ACMER has been advised of the release of the European publication entitled "Engineering Guidelines for the Passive Remediation of Acidic and/or Metalliferous Mine Drainage and Similar Wastewaters" (ISBN 0-543827-1-4 September 2003, 166pp). These Guidelines are the outcome of PIRAMID (Passive In-situ Remediation of Acidic Mine Drainage), a major R&D project of the European Commission's 5th Framework R&D Program and can be downloaded free from http://www.ncl.ac.uk/environment/research/PIRAMID.htm.

The new PIRAMID Guidelines differ from earlier documents on the same theme
(e.g. US Bureau of Mines 1994) in the following important ways:
- they cover both passive treatment and 'passive prevention', i.e. the prevention of pollutant release by use of dry covers and water covers, etc.
- they cover a far wider 'repertoire' of contaminants than earlier guidelines, offering advice on passive remediation methods for Zn, As, U and cyanide in addition to the 'normal' contaminants (e.g. acidity, iron, aluminium, etc.).
- they include much detailed, practical information on the civil engineering aspects of passive remediation.
